Rate Fears Hurt Dollar

Associated Press

The dollar fell against the Japanese yen Thursday in a day of volatile trading marked by fears that inflation worries will prompt Japanese investors to sell massive U.S. bond holdings, weakening the dollar.

Over two days, numerous Federal Reserve officials stoked fears that the growing U.S. economy will revive inflation, which would weaken long-term bond prices.

“I don’t think that the dollar is all that comfortable with the inflation fears,” said Lisa Finstrom, a senior currency analyst with Smith Barney Inc.
