North Cascades, east slope
Ranger District contacted: Methow Valley, Winthrop office (509) 996-4000 Snow level: 4,000-4,500 feet, rising to 5,000 in areas. Notes: Andrews Creek Trail is open for several miles, although the upper valley is still choked with snow. The trail climbs gradually through old forests occasionally dipping down alongside the creek. Deer are reportedly plentiful here this spring.
Alpine Lakes, east slope
Ranger District contacted: Leavenworth, (509) 782-1413. Snow level: 4,500 feet, some deep valley patches. Notes: The Enchantment Permit Area has been expanded this summer to include Eight-mile and Caroline lakes, as well as Mount Cashmire and Windy Pass, so hikers will need to check a map before venturing out to see if they need a permit.
South Cascades, east slope
Ranger District contacted: Wind River, (509) 427-5645. Snow level: 4,500-5,000 feet. Notes: A new trail to the summit of Dog Mountain, the Augspurger Mountain Trail is open. It offers excellent views of the Columbia Gorge as it ascends from the Dog Mountain Trailhead up the west side of the mountain to reconnect with the old trail. xxxx
