Capitals, Juneau Keep Penguins Chilly
Around the NHL
Joe Juneau had his second career hat trick as the Washington Capitals kept the Pittsburgh Penguins winless on the road with a 4-2 victory Friday night at Landover, Md.
Juneau had two power-play goals and a shorthanded score.
The Penguins fell to 0-8 on the road and 2-9 overall.
Teemu Selanne of Anaheim also scored a hat trick, the 11th of his career, as the Mighty Ducks snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over San Jose.
Sabres busy
The Buffalo Sabres removed second-year president Doug Moss and replaced him with Larry Quinn, the man who guided the Sabres into a new $127 million arena, the team announced.
Meanwhile, the Sabres learned that defenseman Alexei Zhitnik has been suspended for two games and fined $1,000 for a high-sticking incident in a game against Dallas.
Only $100,000 down
A group of private investors from St. Paul has put up the $100,000 non-refundable expansion application fee, hoping to bring a team to Minnesota’s capital. Atlanta, Houston, Nashville, Oklahoma City and Columbus, Ohio, also were expected to apply for expansion teams. The league is seeking four new franchises by 2000.
