Lumberjacks, Kellogg Take Early State Tumbles

Corey Taule Special To The Spokesman-Review

State A-2 volleyball

It figured that Preston and St. Maries would eventually meet at the A-2 state volleyball tournament. Since the A-2 division was started in 1981, no other team has won a state championship.

However, nobody could have figured this: St. Maries and Preston will play this morning, but thanks to Bear Lake and Emmett, the game will be in the loser’s bracket.

Bear Lake beat St. Maries 7-15, 15-7, 15-4 in the opening round of the the tournament, but the Lumberjacks came back to defeat Weiser to earn a shot at Preston.

While St. Maries was being upset by Bear Lake, Kellogg was losing to Preston, 15-10, 15-2. But the Wildcats bounced back with a 15-13, 15-10 win over Shelley and will play Wood River today.

“This is how we’ve played all year,” said Kellogg coach Laurie Roberts after the Shelley game. “We played really loose tonight. We were really confident.”

Cassidy Bemis had 26 assists for Kellogg against Shelley and Amy Lemon had 10 kills.

In St. Maries’ two games, Bridgette O’Dwyer had 17 kills and 16 blocks. Jamie Hammes had 47 digs and Alicia Adams was 31 for 31 in converting serves.
