Petticrew Keeps Lakeside Alive

Northeast A League

George Petticrew returned to the Northeast A League Friday, just in time to eliminate Medical Lake from playoff contention.

Petticrew, who broke his hand in Lakeside’s league opener, completed 5 of 13 passes and rushed for a fourth-quarter touchdown as the Eagles (5-3, 5-1) won 21-13 at Medical Lake.

If Lakeside wins at Deer Park next Friday, it will clinch at least a tie for one of the league’s two playoff berths.

League-leading and fifth-ranked Chewelah (7-0, 5-0) plays at Kettle Falls (0-7, 0-5) this afternoon then completes its league season Friday at Colfax (6-2, 5-1), leaving open the possibility of a three-way tie for first. Chewelah has already beaten Lakeside, which has beaten Colfax.

Lakeside’s Tai Saito rushed for 102 yards on 18 carries. Brandon Moore rushed for 108 for Medical Lake (4-4, 3-3), which needed a win to entertain playoff hopes.

Anthony Haynes rushed for 136 yards on 23 carries to guide Colfax to a 33-7 win at Freeman (2-6, 2-4). Freeman’s Brandon Miller combined for 117 rushing and receiving yards.

Newport (2-6, 2-4) can’t make the playoffs, but the Grizzlies played as if they could during a 37-28 win over visiting Deer Park (1-7, 1-5).

Newport fell behind 21-0 and still trailed 21-8 when Eli Marsh forced a Stags fumble that Andy Bell returned to the 1-yard line. Marsh finished 9 of 14 passing for 143 yards and backfield mate Mike Hastings rushed for 150.
