Regional Cross Country Action Today
University High’s boys and girls teams are in Richland today attempting to qualify for state cross country meets.
Three teams and the top 15 individuals advance from regional competition, which begins at 12:55 p.m. at Carmichael Middle School.
Traditionally, the GSL produces the state’s best teams and individuals although this is the first time schools are away from Spokane in an attempt to qualify.
U-Hi’s boys finished second in the GSL this year behind perennial state winner Mead. Ferris, North Central, Gonzaga Prep, Richland and Eisenhower are potential challengers.
Although the Titan girls finished third in the GSL, coach Steve Llewellyn said, “we’ll have a few surprises for them.”
Ferris, with the area’s top three runners, won the GSL. Mead, U-Hi and Eisenhower are other contenders for three team berths.
Plaque planned for Chamberlin
University High Booster Club is attempting to establish a memorial award in memory of deceased athlete John Chamberlin.
The award, said Booster Club member Marty Barth, would honor outstanding contributions in football, basketball and baseball for athletes who exemplify Chamberlin’s legacy.
Chamberlin, a 1975 graduate who died last summer, was a three-year starter in all three sports.
Contributions can be made to The John Chamberlin Memorial, c/o Spokane Teachers Credit Union, 13501 E. Sprague, Spokane, WA 99216-0807.
