The Slice We Hope Recognition Will Encourage More Honesty

“You don’t find many honest people,” said Lucy Maglaras, 71.

But she ran into one the other day. Maglaras, who is legally blind, went into the Pronto Plus in the Spokane Valley and paid for the gas her son was pumping. She handed over what she thought was $5 and departed.

A while later, during another errand, she realized she had given the clerk a $50 bill for the gas. When she went back to Pronto Plus, she might have expected a hassle. But instead, the woman she had paid earlier was waiting - smiling and waving $45.

When kids overhear too much political talk: We heard about a 4-year-old girl named McKenzie who invited a young friend to play “County commissioners.”

In McKenzie’s version, this game involved running across the yard. She did this faster than her little friend, whereupon she announced “Mom, I winned…I winned the county commissioners race!”

Slice answers: Co-workers at Principal Financial Group nominated Bonnie Stewart as the office worker who has stained the most blouses while eating at her desk. They’ve become accustomed to seeing her wear lettuce. Apparently some of her drips and spills have been so dramatic that she’s needed to run to a department store and buy a new top just to get through the day.

And Barbara Knutson’s co-workers sent a snapshot of her impressively snack-laden desk and reported that the Fairwood Retirement Village bookkeeper manages to spill something on herself at least once a day.

Doubling up: Katie Boileau turns 18 today. And she’ll be voting.

Passing the hat: After a 12-year-old Valleyford girl who had gathered recyclable materials to help pay for her horse had to put the animal down, the employees of Pacific Recycling helped raise several hundred dollars toward buying a new horse.

Warm-up question: What Inland Northwest woman leads the league in being the target of unsolicited shouted comments from deranged men while she’s walking from her parking spot to her workplace?

Today’s Slice question (take a guess): How many people in the Spokane area are wearing pants fastened with hanging-on-by-a-thread waist buttons that probably won’t make it through the day?
