Goaltenders in the National Hockey League have until Dec. 15 to clean up their equipment or face suspension, the league’s general managers confirmed during their annual meeting in Kanata, Ontario, Thursday.

All goalies will face random, unannounced testing on their equipment as they leave the ice after games, said Brian Burke, the NHL’s director of hockey operations.

“It’s almost like the Olympic dope testing,” he said.

“They never make it to the dressing room. We take them as they come off the ice.”

The plan is to strictly enforce the size of goaltenders equipment, with goalpads restricted to 12 inches in width and blockers to 8 inches by 16 inches.

An infraction results in an automatic one-game suspension.
