Sun Devils Clinch Title Easy Win Puts Asu In Rose Bowl; Stanford Stuns Usc

Associated Press

The California Golden Bears have become Arizona State’s gateway to the Rose Bowl.

The fourth-ranked Sun Devils captured their second Pac-10 championship and a Rose Bowl berth Saturday night with a 35-7 victory over Cal. Ten years and one day ago, ASU beat Cal 49-0 to clinch its first trip to Pasadena.

Thousands among the crowd of 74,963 - largest to watch Arizona State play in Sun Devils Stadium - swarmed the field as the seconds ticked off. Officials planned to take down the goal posts for safety and then turn them over to the mob, but that was only partially completed before fans tore them down.

“It was crazy. Everybody was hugging each other,” said Terry Battle, who gained 165 yards and scored four touchdowns in 24 carries, spearheading a tailback-based attack that wore down the Bears.

At Stanford, Calif., Mike Mitchell rushed for 148 yards in the second half and the Cardinal shut out the Trojans after halftime.

Stanford, which trailed 20-7 at halftime, won for just the third time at home against USC in the past 40 years. The loss severely damaged the Trojans (5-5, 3-4) changes of getting into a bowl game.

Stanford, which entered the contest next-to-last in Div. I-A with an average of just 77 yards rushing per game, ran for 195 yards on 37 carries against Southern California.

Mitchell, who had one carry for minus-1 yard in the first half, had 21 rushes in the second half - including a 4-yard touchdown run that pulled Stanford within 20-14 early in the third period.

The attendance of 41,980 was the smallest for a Southern California-Stanford game since 1962, when the teams drew 41,000 at Stanford Stadium.

Saladin McCullough certainly knows how to atone for his mistakes.

After his fumble was returned 75 yards for an early Arizona touchdown, McCullough came back for the third-best rushing performance in Oregon history as the Ducks snapped a five-game losing streak by beating the Wildcats .

McCullough gained 223 yards in 25 carries and scored five touchdowns even though he sat out most of the final quarter with a pulled right hamstring. McCullough promised more to come.

“This is just one,” he said. “There will be more after this - guaranteed.

“I went through a lot of problems but I overcame them,” he said of his long journey to Oregon. “A lot of people didn’t think I could make it, but I did. Plus, it’s my son’s third birthday today.”

His five touchdowns set a modern-day school record. Charles Taylor scored seven touchdowns against Puget Sound in 1910.
