Cougars Nail Down Quick Win Silvernail’s Near-Perfect Hitting Wastes Asu In Tuneup For Cats
Tenth-ranked Washington State needed just 91 minutes to defeat Arizona State 15-6, 15-11, 15-12 in a Pacific-10 Conference volleyball match Friday night.
Cougar senior Sarah Silvernail, named the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s player of the week last week, led all hitters with 23 kills, making only two errors in 33 attacks for a .636 hitting percentage.
WSU’s Keren Oigman was the only other Cougar in double-figure kills with 11. She also contributed 14 digs. Jennifer Canevari had eight kills and 17 digs.
“I think we had a hard time getting kick-started tonight knowing ASU was out of the race for the NCAA playoffs,” WSU coach Cindy Fredrick said. “The kids are tired and they knew just how hard they had to play to win. Hopefully they’ll save it for Saturday night when they need it.” The Cougars, who improved to 22-4 overall and 13-3 in Pac-10 matches, continue their road trip tonight at No. 25 Arizona. The Wildcats upset No. 14 Washington Friday night in three games. Arizona State dropped to 8-13, 3-12.
The Sun Devils were led by Kirstin Mattson, who had 14 kills. Terri Cox contributed 12 kills and 18 digs.
