Cancellation of the Thanksgiving Challenge Derby by the Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club doesn’t mean they’ve abandoned the effort to raise funds for research and restoration involving the lake’s sport fisheries.

“The extreme action of cancelling the derby was taken because of serious questions concerning the state of the trophy trout population in Lake Pend Oreille,” said club spokesman Dan Gerhart.

Conditions in the lake this year compounded by severe winter and spring flooding led to the worst sport fishing season in memory on the lake.

Club members hope that canceling the derby will leave more fish available for spawning next year.

Unfortunately, the derby is a major fund-raiser for research and protection of the lake’s fisheries.

To compensate this year, the club is sponsoring a raffle for prizes including a Canon Digi-Trol IV downrigger, a GPS unit, Daiwa reels and rods and more.

The $5 raffle tickets are available at North Idaho businesses including Holiday Shores, Pastime Sports, Captains Table, Fins & Feathers, Panhandle Cast & Blast, and Bayview Mercantile.
