Williams Next Red Sox Manager?
With Whitey Herzog fading quickly on the Boston Red Sox’ managerial wish list, all signs point toward Atlanta Braves third base coach Jimy Williams becoming the next Boston manager.
Williams, 53, was scheduled to arrive in Boston late Monday night and stay through Thursday. Red Sox director of corporate communications Kevin Shea said the team was finished with interviews, so Williams’ trip to Boston had to be for something more than that.
Williams succeeded Bobby Cox as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays in 1986 and managed into the 1989 season before being dismissed. He compiled a 281-241 record, with his best season 1987, when he won 96 games.
Twenty-nine players refiled for free agency Monday, raising the total to 101. The players had been covered by restrictions against repeat free agency in a five-year span. But they became eligible when teams failed to offer them salary arbitration by Saturday’s deadline.
