Crowd Boos Ailing Agassi

Compiled From Wire Services

His head clogged and his stomach upset, Andre Agassi played to a booing and whistling crowd in his 6-2, 6-1 loss to Pete Sampras, then dropped out of the ATP Championship in Hanover, Germany.

Agassi said he became ill two days before coming to Germany. He will be replaced in the season-ending tournament by alternate Thomas Enqvist.

Earlier, Thomas Muster stayed alive in the $3.3 million event by beating Michael Chang.

In the day’s final match, Goran Ivanisevic became the first player to secure a semifinal spot when he outlasted Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek.

Spaniards Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Conchita Martinez pounded their way into the quarterfinals of the $2 million Chase Championships in New York.

Martinez outlasted Judith Wiesner of Austria and Sanchez Vicario downed Brenda Schultz-McCarthy of the Netherlands.

Jana Novotna advanced by downing South Africa’s Amanda Coetzer.
