Soccer Star On Mend
Nigerian soccer player Nwankwo Kanu, 20, of Italy’s FC Internazionale team was doing well four days after heart surgery and he could be released from the hospital in a few days, a doctor said.
“He is up and walking and will soon begin a graduated rehabilitation program over the next several months to bring him back to peak level,” said Dr. John R. Kramer, a Cleveland Clinic Hospital cardiologist.
Kramer said Kanu was recently diagnosed with congenital heart disease. He said Kanu was born with a deformed aortic heart valve that began to affect his heart function. Doctors at the hospital decided to repair it surgically.
Kanu led the Nigerian team to the Olympic title at Atlanta this year. He will stay in Cleveland for a month for rehabilitation.
