Group Brings ‘Barber’ Opera To Regional Theaters

Travis Rivers Correspondent

The barber is back. Rossini’s opera revolves around a love-struck aristocrat, a lecherous guardian, his beautiful ward and that ever-present problem solver, the Barber of Seville.

The Western Opera Theater will give two performances of “The Barber of Seville” next week. The San Francisco-based troupe will perform the opera in Sandpoint at the Panida Theatre on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. On Tuesday at the same time, the company will perform Rossini’s masterpiece in Lewiston in the Lewiston High School Auditorium.

Both performances will be in the original Italian with English translations being projected as supertitles above the stage.

The Western Opera Theater, a branch of the San Francisco Opera Center, is now in its 30th season of touring with opera productions. The group is made up of young singers, most of them winners of San Francisco Opera’s Merola Competition. The singers work with directors, coaches and conductors of the San Francisco Opera and with internationally famous visiting artists with San Francisco Opera.

Tickets to the Sandpoint performance are $16 (students $8), available at Eve’s Leaves, Panhandle State Bank and B.J.’s Games & Books in Sandpoint.

Tickets for the Lewiston performance are $20 for all seats, available at Albertson’s, Pepperland Records, Rosauer’s and the Center for Arts & History in Lewiston; Music City in Clarkston; The Combine in Pullman, and Keeney Bros. in Moscow.
