Nfl’s Top Pick Hurt

Compiled From Wire Services

Keyshawn Johnson, the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft, sprained and bruised his right knee during New York Jets’ practice, and it is uncertain if he will play this weekend.

Johnson was hurt when his knee banged into the helmet of cornerback Aaron Glenn. He limped off the field and moments later was taken to the hospital.

The Cincinnati Bengals will start running back Garrison Hearst on Sunday against the Houston Oilers. Ki-Jana Carter, the No. 1 pick in last year’s draft, started the first four games but gained only 103 yards on 45 carries and has lost his starting job.

Elvis Grbac is back for another start and Steve Young is still trying to get back. San Francisco 49ers coach George Seifert said Grbac would start his second straight game at quarterback for the 49ers, who play at St. Louis on Sunday.

Seifert said Young, a two-time MVP with four passing titles in six years as San Francisco’s starter, needs more time to fully recover from a groin strain.

General manager Ron Wolf, the architect of the Green Bay Packers’ resurgence, dismissed rumors he was in the market for another NFL job.

Wolf, who will be 58 in December and who is under contract through 1999, said reports that he is interested in leaving Green Bay “are just rumors and I don’t want to dignify them with any further comment.”
