Schmedding Saves Time With Quick Win In Kickboxing Match

Sarah Schmedding’s Pacific Northwest super lightweight kickboxing championship fight was more a stroll in the park than a rumble.

The 19-year-old Greenacres resident dispatched Tara Morneau of Vancouver, B.C. in a hurry with a first-round technical knockout during a featured bout at the Rumble in the Park kickboxing exhibition last Saturday at Franklin Park on the North Side.

“It was supposed to be a four-round match,” said Schmedding.

When she discovered that Morneau was more kicker than boxer, Schmedding said her strategy was to get inside the legs and pummel her foe with her fists.

“I caught her with a right hook and kept attacking at the head,” said Schmedding.

Morneau’s eyes glazed and she received a standing eight count. Schmedding bore in with a hard right hand to the face driving her opponent into the ropes.

“Her head went back and so did her eyes,” said Schmedding. “They called it.”

Schmedding said she thought the fight would have been tougher and wished that it had gone longer so she could have benefited more from the experience.

“I was afraid before I went in there. I always think everyone is going to be the Terminator,” she said. “I still had the adrenalin rush. If it had gone to the second and third rounds I would have been more relaxed.”

Next up for the 132-pound Valley kickboxer and newly crowned PNW champion is a tag team bout in three weeks in Victoria, B.C. There Schmedding and teammate Amanda Harvey will face boxers who weigh 60 pounds more than Schmedding. Her eventual goal is to be a women’s Golden Glove boxer.
