Montana’s Horn Plays Well In Big Sky Win Over Ewu

Shadle Park High graduate Holly Horn had 13 kills and 11 digs Saturday to guide Montana (6-8, 3-3) to a 12-15, 15-13, 15-6, 15-9 Big Sky Conference volleyball win over visiting Eastern Washington (7-8, 2-4).

Kim Exner had 13 kills and 15 digs and Lynn Robison 11 kills and 15 digs for the Eagles.

Kim Blankinship’s 17 kills and Tracy Holman’s 64 assists led Loyola Marymount (12-2, 2-0) to a 9-15, 15-10, 15-11, 15-2 West Coast Conference win over visiting Gonzaga.

Jennifer Kubista had 19 kills and 16 digs and Nicole Lamoure 40 assists for the Zags (7-11, 0-2).

Whitworth split its two matches at Albertson College’s Blocktoberfest and finished 1-3 at the two-day tournament in Caldwell, Idaho. The Pirates beat Westminster 15-10, 15-6, 15-8 before falling to champion Western Montana 15-6, 15-4, 15-6.

Women’s soccer

Molly Byme and Jennifer Tissue scored goals to lead Whitworth College to a 2-0 win at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma.

Byme scored at 16 minutes with a high kick over Loggers goalkeeper Jen Mark. Tissue added insurance at 78 minutes. The Pirates (9-2 overall) improved to 4-1 in the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. UPS is 7-3, 3-3.

Men’s soccer

Hatal Attalah’s goal on a penalty kick with 2 minutes left gave Bellevue CC (5-1-2 in conference) a 1-0 win over visiting Community Colleges of Spokane (11-2-1, 6-2-1).

The win allowed the Helmsmen to creep within one point of first-place CCS in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges. Bellevue was awarded the kick when a Sasquatch defender pulled down a player in the box. CCS had a scoring chance late in the second half, but goalkeeper John Goldwater blocked it and the defense cleared.

Brian Sponsler’s goal at 2:18 stood up as Puget Sound (5-4-1, 3-2-1) edged visiting Whitworth 1-0 in a rugged NCIC match at Tacoma.

Goalkeeper Matt Yeoman of Whitworth (4-3-1, 3-1-2) faced two serious shots, but the first was enough. The match had 31 fouls.

Cross country

Gonzaga’s women finished ninth among 12 teams at the Sundodger Invitational in Seattle.

The Zags scored 253 points, topped by Beth Mulligan, who ran the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 8.65 seconds for 63rd place. April Franck (19:18.51, 67th place) had the top time for 12th-place Eastern Washington. Club Northwest won with 45 points.

EWU (305 points) and GU (360) took the bottom two positions among 12 men’s teams. EWU’s Tyson Estes (27:26.17 for 8,000 meters) placed 62nd and GU’s Jesse Sampson (27:58.95) was 75th. Oregon won with 32 points, topped by winner Karl Keska (24:04.43). Mead High grad Micah Davis (25:33.23) was 12th.

The CCS men finished ninth at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore., led by Shawn Beitlespacher’s 18th-place finish.

Beitlespacher finished the 8,000 meters in 25:34. The Sasquatch scored 266; Pacific Lutheran won with 47. Whitworth finished 21st.

Whitworth (311 points) was 14th and CCS (317) 15th in the women’s race, also won by PLU (69). Heather Harmon, formerly of West Valley High, ran 18:37 to place 11th for fourth-place North Idaho College.
