Ready For Some More Miscellany?
It’s time for another column of genealogical potpourri - not just stuff, but good stuff!
Dean Clay, president of the Eastern Washington Genealogical Society, is a retired Air Force officer. In the society’s June Bulletin, Clay contributed an article, “Addresses for Research Assistance Concerning the U.S. Air Force.”
The list of 38 addresses includes the Confederate Air Force, Air Force Magazine and the Air Force Academy. For a copy of this list, send me a stamped, self-addressed envelope c/o this paper.
Erling Hjortedal recently wrote regarding a column from last spring on Norwegian bygdeboker (farm books). He has a bygdeboker for Austevoll and Shanevik, where his parents were born. If you think your family might be listed in these farm books, Hjortedal will be happy to share them with you. Contact him at 327-6839.
Those with New England roots will be overjoyed to learn that the long-awaited CD-ROM containing the entire “New England Historical and Genealogical Register, 1847-1994,” volumes 1 through 148, plus the complete index, is FINALLY available.
The price is $295 (NEHGS members, $265), plus $3 shipping. Send orders to NEHGS Sales, 160 N. Washington, Boston MA, 02114-2120. (Why don’t we take up a collection at the next EWGS meeting and purchase this disk for our computer library? Yes, the library has all the volumes, and each volume has an index, but searching on CD ROM is so much faster.)
On this same subject, the New England Connexion, P.O. Box 621, Goshen, NY 10921, coordinated by Nancy Smit, seeks to become a clearinghouse for those with New England ancestry. The sample issue she sent me included a membership registration form on which members can list all their family names, their specific resources, and the family genealogies or local histories they own or have access to, plus their queries. The newsletter then carries that information from member subscribers. Send your membership fee of $8 for four issues to the above address.
“The Scotch-Irish,” by Bill and Mary Durning, tells the story of the first Scots and English to migrate to Ireland during the early plantation period of 1600.
This unique volume is designed to pinpoint the location in Ireland where the earliest arrivals of a given surname settled. For those of Scotch-Irish descent wishing to trace their surname back to Ireland, this book could save a great deal of search time. This 184-page book can be ordered for $15.95, postpaid, from the Irish Family Names Society, P.O. Box 2095, LaMesa, CA 91943-2095.
