Kootenai School Districts Seek Bond Levies Post Falls And Lakeland Asking Voters For New Schools And Other Improvements

Lakeland and Post Falls, two fast-growing Kootenai County school districts, will ask voters today for approval to build new schools.

Post Falls

The school district is seeking a $15.8 million bond levy to build a high school for 1,300 students and refurbish the heating system in the existing building, which would be converted to a middle school.

A separate ballot measure seeks $1.9 million to build a community auditorium and athletic complex at the new school and to buy cafeteria equipment for the middle school.

If both measures are passed, the cost to a property taxpayer whose home is assessed at $100,000 would be $74 per year.

Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. They are located at all schools and the Pleasant View Community Center.

Absentee ballots still can be cast from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. at the district office, 206 W. Mullan.

Lakeland

The school district is seeking approval of an $8.6 million bond levy. The money would be spent on a new 700-student junior/senior high school in Spirit Lake, plus the addition of several classrooms to Garwood Elementary School in Rathdrum.

If the measure is passed, a property taxpayer whose home is assessed at $125,000 would pay $48 per year.

Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. They are located in all elementary schools, plus the Bayview Community Center and Hauser and Twin Lakes fire stations.

In both districts, residents can vote at any polling place.

If not yet registered to vote, a person must provide identification (driver’s license or military photo ID) and proof of 30-day residency (rent receipt or phone or utility bill). Voters must be 18 or older.
