Chisox ‘Settle’ For Bevington
Terry Bevington is coming back, although he wasn’t the first choice of the Chicago White Sox.
Less than two weeks after the team aggressively pursued Jim Leyland, Bevington signed a two-year contract Saturday to return as manager.
“They had the opportunity to try and get who a lot of teams feel is the best manager in baseball,” Bevington said. “That does not really reflect on me. I was always aware of what was happening. The organization kept me abreast of what was going on.”
Bevington said his two-year contract does not contain an option. Financial details of the new deal were not disclosed.
Owners wife beaned
The wife of one of the owners of the St. Louis Cardinals was knocked unconscious during Game 3 of the N.L. championship series after being struck on the head by a foul popup.
Kathy Hanser, the wife of Fred Hanser, was sitting in the front row just to the right of home plate when she was hit during Marquis Grissom’s at-bat to start the third inning.
Team trainer Gene Gieselmann left the dugout to administer to Hanser and Cardinals team physician Stan London also was at her side. She had been revived and was wearing a neck brace at the half-inning when she was taken by stretcher to the trainers’ room, team official Joe Abernathy said.
Preliminary X-rays were negative on Hanser, who was taken to BarnesJ-ewish Hospital to see a neurosurgeon and possibly undergo a CAT scan.
