Cheney High Band Stays On High Note At Competition

Janice Podsada Staff writer

When the Cheney High School Band took first place in the marching band contest at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane on Saturday, it might have come as no surprise.

The Blackhawks band has won the AA-level competition the past four years as well.

The band competed against five other bands from Washington state and Idaho in the AA division schools with 600 to 1,000 students - said Cheney band director Terry Lack.

The 115-member-band marched to the jazz composition “Cuban Fire Suite,” Lack said.

On Oct. 26, the band will compete in the Puget Sound Marching Band Championships, where it has won the AA-level competition three years in a row, Lack said.

Fall Frolic benefit planned

The Jefferson Elementary School Fall Frolic on Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. will benefit the Maloney family.

Proceeds from the event will go to the family.

Tom Maloney has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. His family, which includes wife Carolyn and three children, has chosen to care for him at home rather than at a hospital, said Sue Silver, president of the Jefferson Parent Teacher Group.

The benefit will feature $1 ice-cream sundaes, bingo and family fall pictures for $5. Donations may be sent to Jefferson Elementary School, c/o PTG, 3612 S. Grand Blvd., Spokane, WA 99203.

Hutton runner accustomed to first place

Katie Johnson, a sixth-grader at Hutton Elementary School who has been on the run since kindergarten, will participate in her final elementary school cross county meet today at 4:30 p.m. at Comstock Park.

Katie has been undefeated in every cross country meet in Spokane School District 81 since kindergarten, said John Akins, her cross country coach and fifth-grade teacher at Hutton.

Since she began serious running at age 5, Katie has participated in three meets per year, plus the all-city competition, and won every meet in her age group, Akins said.

“Her mother and father have been very supportive,” Akins said. “If she wins, I promised her a nice dinner at a nice restaurant.”

Sacajawea invites parents

Parents of future Sacajawea Middle School students are invited to a forum on Tuesday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Sacajawea cafeteria.

Participants are invited to meet other parents, share ideas about getting involved in their children’s education and develop a plan to enhance student learning.

Grant students perform today

Drummers and Dancers, a group of 30 fifth- and sixth-graders from Grant Elementary, will perform today at 10 a.m. in the student center at Spokane Community College during an educators’ conference, “Unity in our Community.”

Drummers and Dancers practices once a week before school to perfect their unique African music and dance style, said Melinda Winther, the group’s director.

The group’s next performance after today’s will be in December at the Crescent Court downtown. The performance will be part of the Christmas Tree Elegance program, sponsored by the Spokane Symphony Orchestra.
