Mead, Ferris Prep For Big Gsl Showdown

Mead’s top-ranked boys and girls won twice Wednesday to remain perfect heading into their final Greater Spokane League cross country meets against Ferris.

Jason Fayant topped the field at Manito Park and led the Mead boys (6-0) to wins over Rogers and host Lewis and Clark. Fayant’s time of 15 minutes, 55 seconds over 3 miles beat the field by 18 seconds. Runner-up Cameron Hatch helped Rogers (2-4) to a 22-24 win over LC (1-5), which ran without injured No. 3 runner Nate Nelson.

Katie Pollock (19:37) led the girls pack as Mead (6-0) placed six runners in the top 10. Pollock broke away at the end to edge LC’s Jamie Borgan by 2 seconds. Despite running without No. 2 Mindy Noble and No. 5 Corey Mullen - both injured - eighth-ranked LC (3-3) easily handled Rogers (0-6).

Mead hosts Ferris and North Central Wednesday at Whitworth College to end the league season.

The second-ranked Ferris girls are 6-0 and the third-ranked boys 5-1 after double wins at home.

Isaac Hawkins (15:17) smoked the field as Ferris placed five in the top nine to beat Shadle and CV. Runner-up Casey Perry guided Shadle (1-5) to a win over CV (0-6), which had Robby Warnock (16:27) in fourth place.

U-Hi’s second-ranked boys tied Ferris for second place with wins over fourth-ranked Gonzaga Prep and host North Central at Audubon Park. U-Hi’s James Berry (15:23 for 3 miles) held off Jon Caballero (15:27) of NC and teammate Seth Mott (15:28) for the title. NC (4-2) ran without No. 3 Brad Dahlquist, nursing a hip injury.

Taraka Campbell (18:54) led a 1-4 showing as the third-ranked U-Hi girls (4-2) swept to two wins. Fifthplace Jill Larson (19:33) led G-Prep (2-4) over NC (1-5).
