With a deadline two days away, negotiators from General Motors and the Canadian Auto Workers sought compromises Saturday to end an 18-day strike idling more than 33,000 workers in Canada and the United States.

Both sides said they were ready to negotiate around the clock if necessary to reach an agreement by noon Monday. Success could mean a union ratification vote as early as Wednesday, while failure could prolong the strike substantially.
