Symphonic Work By Gu Prof Debuts Wednesday At Met

“Clare Symphony,” a composition by the Rev. Kevin Waters, a Gonzaga University music professor, will have its premiere presentation at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at The Met.

Kevin Hekmatpanah will direct Gonzaga’s 65-piece symphony orchestra.

While “Clare Symphony” was a work-in-progress, it was performed by the North Colorado State University Orchestra at Fort Collins.

Also included in Wednesday’s program will be Schumann’s “Cello Concerto,” conducted by Todd Snyder of North Idaho College, and Bizet’s “Carmen Suite No. 1.”

The $4 tickets may be purchased through Gonzaga’s music department at 328-4220, ext. 3333, or G&B Select-a-Seat outlets, 325-SEAT.

Power of Place

Artists SuChen Hung, Jack Mackie and Mierle Laderman-Ukeles share a commonality in art - their humanistic approach.

The three are also speakers for this year’s Visiting Artist at Cheney Cowles Museum, Eastern Washington University and Spokane Falls Community College.

SuChen Hung begins the series with her lecture Tuesday at noon at EWU’s Music Building and 7:30 p.m. in the museum’s auditorium. Wednesday noon, she will speak in SFCC’s Music Building Auditorium.

Hung, a Taiwan immigrant, studied filmmaking and photography at the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been described as “perched about as far out on the limb as you can get, at the point where art meets pure spirit.”

Her works have been exhibited in galleries across America, Switzerland and Japan.

EWU artist displays paintings

Richard Twedt, art department chairman at Eastern Washington University, will display a group of his paintings, “The Italian Light Series,” during the run of “The Triumph of Love” at Spokane Interplayers, Oct. 25 to Nov. 18.

Twedt’s paintings were inspired by light atmospheres he observed in a 1990 visit to Italy. Each painting contains a small window through which the viewer sees suggested landscapes in assorted colors and light treatments, an EWU spokesman said. Many of the 15 oil-on-canvas and oil-on-wood paintings contain a copper or gold-leaf underlayer.

The public may view the works from 7-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, and 7:30-8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Theatergoers can see them during intermissions.

Exhibition proposals sought

The Gallery Program at Eastern Washington University is accepting proposals for one-person and/or group exhibitions for the 1997-‘98 exhibit season. The program is open to professional artists working in all media.

Send 10 to 20 35mm slides of representative work, your resume and a $10 processing fee, along with your address and a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Richard Twedt, director of University Galleries, Dept. of Art, MS-102, Eastern Washington University, Cheney, WA 99004.

Submission deadline is April 17, 1997.
