UI, Ewu Golfers Play Ryder Cup Matches

The inaugural University of Idaho-Eastern Washington University Ryder Cup golf matches will be held today and Wednesday.

The schools pitched in and bought a nice trophy to go to the team which wins the championship.

Today’s two-person, best-ball matches (three men’s and three women’s) will be held at the University of Idaho Golf Course.

Singles matches will be played Wednesday at The Creek at Qualchan in Spokane.

As in the Ryder Cup, the first team to score 12.5 points wins. There are 24 possible points.

“We’d like to make this an annual thing,” University of Idaho coach Kurt Zimmerman said. “Both teams will be very competitive.”

Rowing

Washington State University’s women’s Varsity Eight finished second to University of Washington by only .06 seconds at the Campbell Cup Regatta Saturday at Lake Chelan near Wenatchee.

The Cougars Junior Varsity Eight was successful in defeating the Huskies for the first time on the 1500-meter sprint course.

WSU, the defending Pacific-10 Conference champion, was timed in 5:08.51. UW finished in 5:09.93.

Last season, Washington State finished third nationally.

Washington State’s Varsity Eight placed second in the Pacific-10 Conference last year, when the Cougars wound up seventh nationally.

“In the varsity race, Washington got a couple of seats jump on us early,” WSU varsity coach Tammy Crawford said.

“We caught up, but they won by less than a second.

“We’ll see them again this fall in Portland so we’ll have another chance to beat them.”

WSU will row Sunday at the Head of Spokane Regatta on the Spokane River and will meet Washington again on Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Portland Loop Regatta on the Willamette River in Portland.

Ice hockey

Golden scored five times in the first period and went on to defeat the Spokane Braves 9-2 Sunday in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League game in Eagles Ice-A-Rena.

Three players had two goals apiece for Golden.

Norm Lochten and Adrian Wong scored in the first and third period for the Braves.
