The candidates

Bill Clinton, after six days of campaigning, was back at the White House Saturday to celebrate the 49th birthday of his wife, Hillary. Clinton used his Saturday radio address to urge states to help victims of gang violence with millions of dollars from criminal fines paid by an American agribusiness company and a Japanese bank.

Ross Perot was campaigning in Ohio and Florida, two battleground states heatedly contested by Clinton and Dole. Perot and his supporters insist he’s not trying to play spoiler despite his low ranking in the polls. Perot rejected Dole’s bid last week for him to drop out and endorse the Republican, and the Reform Party candidate seemed to be savoring the renewed attention to his own campaign. “Don’t tell the pollsters that you’re coming,” Perot urged a cheering Pensacola, Fla., audience.
