This ‘Affair’ Was Nothing To Remember

John Martin New York Times Syndicate

Bonnie Bedelia stars in “Her Costly Affair” (CBS at 9), a cheap-thrills TV movie about a college professor who makes the mistake of having a one-night stand with a student (Brian Austin Green).

Not that it’s a good idea to begin with, but Diane Weston (Bedelia) has no way of knowing that he’s a psychopath who killed a female professor at the last college he attended.

Weston, whose marriage has turned cold, is flattered by the attention of handsome Jeff Dante (Green). In a moment of weakness, she sleeps with her persistent suitor. Realizing it was a bad decision, she tries to break if off. But he becomes more determined, going to unsettling extremes to convince her to remain his lover.

s Dante becomes more maniacal the movie becomes more predictable. Ignoring obvious danger (the guy carries an automatic pistol), Weston attempts to resolve the affair herself.

Bedelia’s talent is wasted. But that doesn’t mean you have to waste your evening watching this formula dreck.

Highlights

“Football,” ABC at 6: The Chicago Bears (2-5) meet the Minnesota Vikings (5-1) in an NFC Central mismatch.

“Ink,” CBS at 8:30: Mike (Ted Danson) writes a column that leads to a lawsuit that could bust the paper’s budget. Kate (Mary Steenburgen) goes to hilarious lengths to cut enough expenses to avoid layoffs.

“Mr. Rhodes,” NBC at 8:30: A flat Halloween episode stumbles with a trio of story lines, each as bad as the other. I’ll give you odds this will be star Tom Rhodes’ first and last sitcom.

“Vote For Me: Politics in America,” KSPS at 8 and Tuesday at 8: You don’t have to be a political junkie to be captivated by this insightful and often humorous two-part series taped during the 1994 campaign season.

Politicians profiled include five-term Providence, R.I., Mayor Vincent “Buddy” Cianci and California gubernatorial aspirant Kathleen Brown, who embarks on an all-day, all-night bus tour that includes a 3 a.m. stop at a chicken processing plant.

Tuesday night features an absorbing 85-minute account of the North Carolina Congressional campaign of rookie Democrat Maggie Lauterer.

“When Disasters Strike,” FOX at 9: Martin Sheen hosts this hour that revisits chilling man-made and natural disasters. (Rescheduled from last week.)

“Everybody Loves Raymond,” CBS at 9:30: A blowout between Frank and Marie (Peter Boyle, Doris Roberts) results in Ray and Debra (Ray Romano, Patricia Heaton) acquiring an unwanted house guest. CBS gives two Friday shows, “Raymond” and “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” (at 10) Monday runs this week only.

Parents’ Pick

“The Free Willy Story: Keiko’s Journey Home,” DISC at 8 and midnight: The whole family will enjoy this tale of Keiko, the real-life star of “Free Willy.” With his health failing in a too-small Mexico City habitat, an international effort is launched to transfer the orca to a state-of-the-art facility in Newport, Ore.

This is a remarkable account of the massive effort to save Keiko’s life.
