Barkley, Oakley Fined, Suspended
Charles Barkley was suspended for one game and fined $5,000 Monday for a fight with New York’s Charles Oakley in an exhibition game last Friday. Oakley, who instigated the fight by slamming Barkley to the floor, got two games and a $10,000 fine.
Barkley will sit out the Houston Rockets’ opener Friday night at home against the Sacramento Kings, but he’ll be on the court the next night when Houston travels to Phoenix to play his old team, the Suns.
The Portland Trail Blazers have suspended Isaiah Rider for their season opener Friday night for failing to show up for the team’s final exhibition game Sunday. Rider missed the team bus and later said a cab took him to the wrong meeting place.
Rookie Marcus Camby has a slightly sprained and bruised left ankle but is not expected to miss the Toronto Raptors’ season opener.
Bryant Reeves is day-to-day with a nagging hamstring injury and may miss the Vancouver Grizzlies’ season-opener Friday night.
