Panhandle Football Picks With Greg Lee
I go for the hat trick this fall.
For a third year in a row, I’ll match gray matter with area high school administrators, boosters and assorted celebrities to see who can best predict the outcome of high school football games.
Two years ago, I edged the guest prognosticators, 67-22 (.753) to 65-24 (.730). Last year, I scored a decisive victory, 65-18 (.783) to 59-24 (.711).
Our first guest this fall is Lake City High School athletic director Ron Adams.
Adams poses a formidable challenge as the season-opening soothsayer. He was an assistant coach at Coeur d’Alene in the mid-1980s during the school’s string of state playoff appearances before pursuing his administrative credentials.
Post Falls at Lakeland: The Trojans will go far toward balancing the tables in this non-league Rathdrum Prairie rivalry once dominated by the Hawks.
Post Falls shouldn’t have much problem notching their third straight win over Lakeland. The senior-laden Trojans will line up against a team that could start as many as eight sophomores.
A young Lakeland defense will be chasing speedy Trojans running back Jeremy Mort much of the game. And an equally untested Hawks offensive line will find it difficult to defend Trojans defensive end Austin Lee. Post Falls 28, Lakeland 7.
Guest: Post Falls has a returning veteran team on both sides of the line. Lakeland is still rebuilding, but Post Falls needs to stay focused for this game. Post Falls 31, Lakeland 14.
Coeur d’Alene at Boise: The Viks dropped a 15-14 heartbreaker at home against Boise last year in coach Bill Anderson’s debut.
Ben Davis’ long-range kicking ability will be the difference as the Viks avenge last year’s defeat. CdA 20, Boise 18.
Guest: Coeur d’Alene has great athletes returning at its skill positions. Both the offense and defense will be tough this year.
Playing on Boise State University’s blue carpet has been a great experience in the past. CdA 24, Boise 14.
St. Maries at Lake City: It won’t take the Timberwolves another two years to post their second win in school history.
Behind a ball-control offense and an improving defense, LC prevails. T-Wolves 20, Lumberjacks 13.
Guest: St. Maries graduated most of its team from last year. Lake City returns 11 seniors, but is young at quarterback. Playing at home will give the T-Wolves the edge. LC 28, St. Maries 14.
