Rain Delays Busch Race
NASCAR and track officials still plan to hold the Miller 400 at Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, Va., today after drivers get only one chance to earn a spot in the field.
Heavy overnight rain that caused widespread power outages forced the postponement of Friday’s first-round qualifying. The drivers’ only chance to make the field will come this afternoon when all positions will be set. The NASCAR Busch Grand National series’ $295,938 Autolite Platinum 250 on the 3/4-mile oval at Richmond has been rescheduled for Sunday. Chad Little, of Spokane, qualified seventh.
Jimmy Vasser began to look more like a shoo-in for the PPG Cup championship as pursuers Michael Andretti and Al Unser Jr. ran into trouble in the opening round of qualifying for the Bank of America 300 at Monterey, Calif.
Bryan Herta took the provisional pole for Sunday’s race at Laguna Seca Raceway, outdistancing Mark Blundell of Britain, Mauricio Gugelmin of Brazil and Vasser on the first of two days of time trials on the reconfigured 2.238-mile, 11-turn road course.
Andretti trails Vasser by just 14 points in the PPG Indy Car World Series going into the season finale, but qualified a disappointing 11th.
