Vandals Lasso Title At Wyoming
The University of Idaho volleyball team rallied behind the sterling performance of senior Louisa Kawulok to upend the University of Wyoming and win the Cowgirls Tournament Saturday in Laramie, Wyo.
Kawulok, voted most valuable player of the two-day tournament, powered the Vandals with 15 kills and had 15 digs as the Vandals downed the host Cowgirls 15-9, 15-17, 15-12, 15-10.
Earlier in the day, Idaho dispatched Texas-San Antonio 15-9, 15-9, 15-8.
The win improved the Vandals’ record to 6-0.
The Vandals recorded 84 kills to 67 for the Cowgirls (3-4). Jeri Hymas, who had 86 kills this week, led the Vandals with 25. Jessica Moore, who had 77 for the week, added 20.
Lynne Hyland had 62 assists to bring her total for the week to 239.
Washington State recorded its seventh win and remained undefeated by whipping Iowa State 15-3, 15-8, 15-5, to win the Iowa State Invitational Tournament in Ames, Iowa.
The No. 7-ranked Cougars, who will play their entire September schedule on the road, began the day with a 15-11, 15-9, 15-9 win over Iowa.
WSU’s Sarah Silvernail was named the tournament MVP. Teammates Elis Arias and Shannon Wyckoff were voted onto the All-Tournament team.
One week earlier, Silvernail was named MVP at the Cougar Classic.
Cross country
North Idaho College finished second in the NAIA/CC meet at Whitman College Invitational in Walla Walla. The Cardinals edged Whitman 30-51. Heather Harmon finished seventh at 19:16.
At the Lakeland High School Invitational, Lewiston won the boys meet behind Aron Taylor, who finished first in 18:01. In girls competition, Bonner Ferry won the team meet while Lewiston’s Hallie Warnock finished first individually in 21:46.
High School volleyball
In Intermountain League play, Lewiston defeated Post Falls 15-12, 12-15, 17-15 at Lewiston. The Trojans (2-1, 0-1) were led by Heidi Strobel (four aces), Lindsy Klaudt (eight digs) and Jessica Waltz and Janelle Ruen (six digs each).
In another IML game, Kellogg defeated Moscow 15-12, 15-3 behind Melissa Hei’s five kills and 12 service points.
In a non-league game, the Wildcats beat Orofino 15-7, 16-14. Amy Lemon had four kills and Marcy Swift had eight service points for Kellogg.
High school girls soccer
Coeur d’Alene senior Nicolette Richards scored an unassisted goal at 75:00, but Kennewick came back to win the game 2-1 just a minute later in a non-league game at Coeur d’Alene. The Vikings dropped to 2-1.
Liz Thompson scored two goals and added an assist to lead Lake City past Post Falls 10-0 in a North Idaho League game at Lake City.
Lake City (1-1-1, 1-0-1) took 50 shots on goal while Post Falls had three (0-2 league).
