Hiring Under Scrutiny

A former player under Jerry Tarkanian, who was hired this month to help athletes ease into college life at Fresno State, was fired as a prison guard for alleged brutality just two weeks earlier, the Fresno Bee reported.

Correctional officer Roscoe Pondexter was fired Aug. 12 from Corcoran State Prison (Sacamento) for allegedly beating inmates and attacking another guard, state records show.

Less than two weeks after the firing, Fresno State athletic director Al Bohl hired Pondexter to serve as a mentor to student-athletes.
