Nfl’s Return To L.A. Centers On Coliseum

R.D. Hubbard took Hollywood Park out of the running Friday as a site for an NFL team, at least for the present, and instead will support efforts to return pro football to the Los Angeles Coliseum.

The Hollywood Park chairman told NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue in a letter that he will resume efforts to build a stadium adjacent to the race track only if the Coliseum is turned down for an NFL team.

“There is a groundswell of support to restore one of the area’s most significant historical landmarks and we will not interfere with that effort,” Hubbard said in a statement.

The Coliseum played host to the Olympics in 1932 and 1984.

The L.A. area has been without an NFL team since the Raiders left the Coliseum for Oakland and the Rams left Anaheim for St. Louis prior to last season.

NFL officials had been opposed to putting an expansion team in the Coliseum, but have softened their stand in recent months.
