George Mason Tops Gu Field

Led by tournament MVP Joy Kingsley-Ibeh, George Mason completed its march to the fifth Spikeoff Spokane volleyball tournament title by downing host Gonzaga University 15-6, 15-6, 15-0 in Gonzaga’s Martin Centre.

The Patriots, 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the tournament, didn’t lose a game during the weekend. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 5-7 overall, and to 1-2 for third place in the tournament.

In the night’s first match, Michigan (4-5) claimed second place at 2-1 after defeating Wyoming (3-8) 15-11, 15-8, 15-5. In the morning session, George Mason rolled past Michigan 15-5, 15-12, 15-2 and Gonzaga beat Wyoming 15-11, 15-4, 15-7.

Michigan reserve setter Erin McGovern of Sandpoint played in all three games against George Mason.

McGovern finished with seven assists and attempted to start a Wolverines rally in the third game with consecutive service aces for the only Michigan points in the game.

Gonzaga’s Jennifer Kubista led the Bulldogs with 16 kills and 12 digs.

University of Idaho improved to 9-0 for the season by defeating Eastern Washington 15-4, 15-3, 15-5 and followed with a 15-6, 15-13, 15-6 win over DePaul (2-8) in the Branegan’s/McCoy Plumbing Vandal Volleyball Classic in Moscow, Idaho.

After losing to the Vandals, Eastern Washington’s Eagles rebounded with a 6-15, 15-8, 15-13, 15-6 win over Connecticut (6-3) to finish with a 2-1 tournament record.

Idaho senior setter Lynne Hyland earned tournament MVP honors by accumulating 109 assists in three games.

Eastern (5-3) received strong performances from Toni Schwinn, who had 53 assists in two games, and Kim Exner, who finished with a two-day total of 31 kills.

In Saturday’s first match, UConn defeated DePaul 15-10, 15-5, 12-15, 15-4.

Whitworth fell to 0-3 in the NCIC and 1-8 overall with a 15-12, 15-3, 15-2 loss to Willamette at Whitworth. Mandy Hogan had four kills for the Pirates.

Idaho will play host to sixth-ranked Washington State Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., when the Vandals will put their 49-match Memorial Gym winning streak on the line.

Women’s soccer

Jacki Doman scored two goals and had an assist and Dominique Barcellona added two goals as Utah shut out Gonzaga 7-0 at the Diadora Tournament in Missoula.

Gonzaga (1-4) managed only five shots on goal while the Utes finished with 17.

Bulldogs goalie Sara Kinskey was taken to the hospital for treatment of a possible broken finger. She finished with three saves and reserve goalie Amy Dorsett had one.

Whitworth’s Haley Nichols scored the first goal of the game, but Seattle University countered with three straight to beat the No. 2-ranked Pirates 3-1.

The loss was Whitworth’s first of the year and dropped the Pirates to 5-1.

“We came right at them and they didn’t break,” Whitworth coach Daman Hagerott said.

Nichols scored at 13:30 behind the assist of Chrisanne Roseleip. Seattle’s Katie Jackson answered at 33:30. Trisha Tateyama followed at 40:00 and Erin Roycroft scored the final goal at 90:00.

The Pirates compiled 16 shots on goal to 10 for the Chieftains. Goalie Trinity Meriwood stopped seven shots and Whitworth’s Jen Peterson stopped 10.

Men’s soccer

Brian Ching accounted for a goal and an assist as Gonzaga claimed the Umbro Classic at San Jose, Calif., with a 3-1 win.

Jeff McAllister also scored for the Bulldogs, who got on the board with a Spartans’ own goal at 23:23.

GU, which has won three straight games, improved to 3-2-1. Until Friday, it had lost 18 straight in California.

Jeremy Stuart had three goals and one assist as the Community Colleges of Spokane routed Flathead Valley Community College 13-0 at Spokane.

Flathead Valley is a club team from Missoula. The win improved the Sasquatch to 6-0.
