Fredericks Runs To Victory
In a season-ending showdown of the world’s fastest sprinters, Frankie Fredericks outran Olympic champion Donovan Bailey of Canada as well as Americans Carl Lewis and Dennis Mitchell on Monday.
Fredericks’ time of 10.02 seconds, however, was not even close to Bailey’s world-record Olympic time of 9.84. Mitchell was second in 10.08 with Bailey third in 10.14.
Lewis, who set a 100-meter world record in Tokyo in 1991, finished a distant sixth in 10.37.
Jamaican veteran Marlene Ottey also gained a measure of revenge against American nemesis Gail Devers in the women’s 100, reversing their Olympic finish and winning in 10.94.
