Rogers’ Win Over Mead Puts Volleyball Team In Tie For First

Everyone expected Mead to be among Greater Spokane League volleyball contenders. But Rogers?

The upstart Pirates who last won more than three games in a season in 1984, had a chance to surpass that figure Wednesday after beating Mead to share first place with favored Ferris.

When the two North Side teams squared off Tuesday, both teams were unbeaten, Mead at 3-0 and the Pirates at 2-0.

Included among their victims were last year’s state runnerup Lewis and Clark and Shadle Park. The Panthers also beat last year’s league champion, Gonzaga Prep.

Highlander Invite grows

The Highlander Invitational Cross Country meet continues to grow.

Thirty schools will be in attendance Saturday for the meet, which inaugerates the season for many.

“Randy (Lothspeich, Shadle’s boys coach) and I decided a few years ago to make it a real attraction,” said girls coach Bob Isitt. “We are giving out 28 trophies and (awards for) places down to 20 this year.”

Coaches and runners have told Isitt that this is their favorite invitational meet.

“And the T-shirts are great,” he added.

Speaking of T-shirts…

North Central High School is again selling its alumni T-shirts as a fundraiser for the cross country team.

To order one, call coach Jon Knight at the high school, 353-5220.

“It’s a good fund-raiser,” he said. “It helped us out a lot.”

Look who’s unbeaten in football

Not many people would have figured that Thursday’s Mead-Shadle Park football games would have pitted unbeaten teams against each other, either.

The Highlanders shocked early season favorite Gonzaga Prep 10-7 despite only 133 yards of total offense.

Last time the Highlanders and Panthers met in a game with this impact was in 1991 when Shadle beat Mead to share a league title.

Mead had to overcome the shock of trailing upstart North Central 10-0 at halftime and breaking even statistically before winning 27-17.

Upsets and near misses made for an interesting first week with the possibility of more to come.
