Mcglocklin Rambles As Panthers Rumble Senior Running Back Piles Up 179 Yards As Mead Overwhelms Shadle Park 37-7
Scott McGlocklin may have been the only one to notice, but he felt his 89-yard, two-touchdown effort in the Mead Panthers’ season-opening football game was sub-par.
Out to prove a point, if only to himself, the senior running back rambled for 179 yards and two touchdowns Thursday night as the Mead swamped Shadle Park 37-7 before 3,040 fans in the lone Greater Spokane League football game at Albi Stadium.
“I just didn’t have a very good game last week,” the 214-pound battering ram said. “I came out and wanted to pick it up a step. I tried to run as hard as I could, follow my tackles and go for the end zone.”
He did just that, whether charging through big holes or making his own, he kept plowing over defenders.
”(Shadle Park) came in feeling pretty good about their defense and Scott wore them down,” Mead coach Mike McLaughlin said. “Our mental preparation was much better this week than last week. We attempted to start the game the way we started the second half last week. We accomplished that.”
Thanks to turnovers, the Panthers had some short fields, but the way McGlocklin was running, it might not have mattered how far they had to go. Once it was clear stopping McGlocklin was going to take an eight-man front, Mead displayed an effective passing game, especially while back-up quarterback Brandon Muzatko was taking snaps.
“Both quarterbacks played well,” McGlocklin said. “We’ll evaluate it and go with the quarterback that continues to move the team.”
Nate Adams wasn’t as effective passing, but he directed three scoring drives.
Muzatko hit 6 of 7 passes for 79 yards and two touchdowns in the final 4 minutes of the first half to stake the Panthers to a 21-0 lead.
McGlocklin then ran for 48 yards in the third quarter to help boost the lead to 28-0.
“The line did a lot better job,” McGlocklin said. “They fixed what was wrong last week … fired off the ball and had a good game.”
Jeff Lafferty rushed for 98 yards for Shadle Park, but the Highlanders only netted 119.
