Cougars Pull Upset
Soccer
Amy Chippendale and Jody Payne scored second-half goals as Washington State defeated USA Today/NSCAA No. 16 San Diego State 2-1 Friday at Pullman.
The win snapped the Cougars’ four-game home losing streak dating back to last year and improved their record to 2-1. The Aztecs dropped to 6-1.
After Stefanie Mathews gave the visitors a 1-0 lead at about the 32-minute mark, WSU tied the game on Chippendale’s penalty kick at 47:40.
Payne broke the tie at 71:28 when she drilled a shot from 15 yards out. Tina Walsh and Chippendale assisted on the game-winner.
The Cougars continue their homestand Sunday at 1 p.m. against Montana.
Gonzaga and Western Washington combined for 41 shots on goal, but neither team could find the net as the teams battled to a scoreless overtime tie in non-conference action at Martin Field. The Bulldogs (1-4-1) were outshot 22-19 by the Vikings (2-3-2), but Gonzaga keeper Amy Dorsett turned in nine saves. Western’s Kim McArdle had 10 saves. Dorsett, starting in place of Sara Kinsky, who is nursing a dislocated finger, recorded her second shutout of the season.
College men
At Wenatchee, Kevin Mosher scored two goals and Paul Johnson added another, along with two assists, as undefeated Community Colleges of Spokane beat Wenatchee Valley 5-1.
The Sasquatch improved to 9-0, 4-0 in the NWAACC. WV dropped to 0-4 in conference games.
High school girls
Rogers’ Holly Rushing’s shot from 18 yards out got past North Central goalie Jennifer Weber to give the Pirates a 1-0 overtime victory at Rogers.
Rushing, an Olympic developmental player, scored at 4:00 in OT to raise the Pirates’ record to 2-4. North Central dropped to 0-4 in the non-GSL league game.
Weber had 11 saves and Rogers’ Angie Vulcano accounted for five.
Vulcano made two sliding saves on breakaway one-on-ones, one against Melissa Estrada in the second half and one against Erin Meier in overtime.
