Gsl At A Glance
Rogers 15, LC 0
Key play
When Andy Bayne recovered a fumble on LC’s third play, the spark went out of the Tigers and the Pirates capitalized with a 63-yard, 11-play drive, capped by Aaron Evans’ 3-yard run.
Stars of the game
Most everyone for Rogers, which controlled both lines. Running back Mike Dorton’s cutback runs were good for 132 yards, quarterback Jeff Mace hit 8 of 11 passes for 123 yards and middle linebacker Lewis Wirth sparked a defense that held LC to 196 yards in total offense.
Notable
After taking a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, Rogers threw an interception that put LC on the Pirates 30 but the Tigers fumbled the ball back on the next play. … LC had six penalties for 61 yards in the second half, helping to stall any hope for a comeback and giving the Pirates an edge in field position.

Gonzaga Prep 21, CV 7
Key play
With CV turning the ball over five times, committing numerous penalties at key times and dropping several passes, it’s hard to pinpoint. After closing to 21-7 early in the fourth quarter, the Bears’ defense stopped the Bullpups twice inside their 10 following an ill-advised return of the kickoff pinned them at the 8. However, on third down, Tyson Thielman broke a tackle at the line and rumbled 25 yards, allowing Prep to neutralize a bad field position situation.
Star of the game
Thielman, a linebacker in the season opener, became a running back because the Bullpups didn’t run hard in the first game. He had just 17 yards on seven carries as Prep struggled in the first half but finished with 108 yards and two touchdowns.
Notable
Those first game struggles prompted a couple moves on the line, Darren Ferrell moving to tackle and Sam Gregory moving into the guard spot. … Prep led 7-0 at half despite being out-gained 95-13 on the ground. The Bullpups TD came on a 35-yard pass from Kevin O’Connell to Ryan Turner on the second play after CV fumbled away the snap. The Bears switched quarterbacks but again fumbled the snap on their next possession, although Prep turned the ball over downs at the CV 25. CV also threw an interception in the first half. … Prep had a 77-yard pass-and-run play by the scoring duo called back in the second quarter because of offensive pass interference. … The two best plays belong to CV, Nate McFarlane’s 76-yard kickoff return that set up the Bears’ touchdown and a 50-run by sophomore fullback Tyree Clowe that got the Bears to the 2 with two minutes left, though once against they failed to capitalize.
Next opponent CV plays Mead in Friday’s 8:30 game at Albi; Prep goes to Tacoma to play Clover Park in a nonleague game.
Ferris 22, University 19
Key play
Facing a fourth-and-30 with 61 ticks left, Ferris QB Justin Bursch threw an incomplete pass but a roughing-the-passer call kept the Saxons alive.
Star of the game
Bursch didn’t have a great game but in a game-winning 87-yard drive he ran for one first down on a fourth down and completed two key third-down passes, the final one an 16-yard game winner to Jonathan Parker with 10 seconds left.
Notable
Tim Buchanan returned from an injury and rushed for 139-yards and a touchdown on 28 carries, even though he didn’t start. … Parker’s touchdown was his first since his season was cut short by a serious knee injury with two games left to play last fall. … The Saxons lost to U-Hi 38-27 in their second game last year. … The two teams are 10-10-1 in their last 21 meetings. … The teams combined for almost 200 yards in penalties.
Next opponents
Both teams move into Albi next Thursday, Ferris plays Shadle Park at 5 p.m., U-Hi meets LC at 7:30.
