Mine Rich Smiles From Nbc’s ‘3rd Rock’

Faye Zuckerman New York Times Syndicate

As the new season rolls out (with some hits, but mostly misses, by my accounting), Sunday night is shaping up to be hot, thanks to familiar returning series such as “3rd Rock from the Sun,” “Lois and Clark” and “America’s Funniest Home Videos.”

If you’re looking for a few hearty laughs, John Lithgow as Dr. Dick Solomon on “3rd Rock” (NBC Sunday 8) fulfills giggle cravings.

Lithgow is a master at physical humor and, in the show’s second season opener, you’ll see proof of comedic skills.

Highlights

“Dark Skies,” NBC tonight at 8: The “X-Files”-like series everyone is buzzing about kicks off with a two-hour-long episode about an alien plot to take over the world.

The series - suspenseful and frightening - often borders more on horror than sci-fi.

The show’s strength is its period setting. It takes place in the ‘60s, beginning during the Kennedy years. A wonderful vintage rock ‘n’ roll score combines with an engaging story about government cover-ups and alien perseverance.

“Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,” CBS tonight at 8: Season No. 5’s premiere show has some highfalutin’ action.

Sully and Cloud Dancing are on a train taken over by robbers. Dr. Quinn, armed with her medical bag, comes to the rescue.

“Profiler,” NBC tonight at 10: With a unique ability to understand the criminal mind, Dr. Sam Waters (Ally Walker) solves crimes in this stylish new series, which lacks suspense and panache.

“America’s Funniest Home Videos,” ABC Sunday at 7: An eighth season opens for this “Candid Camera” knockoff. Featured goofs are themed around summer vacations.

“Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman,” ABC Sunday at 8: A two-part episode (Part 2 airs next week) marks the start of a new year for the superhero show. Justine Bateman and Leeza Gibbons gueststar in an hour (unavailable for review) that promises to reveal if Lois and Clark will be forced to live worlds apart.

xxxx It’s Jewell’s first major interview and will be broadcast Sunday at 7 p.m. on KREM-Channel 2. New York Daily News
