Help Teens Keep Control Of Situation
Opening lines of the lead article in a recent issue of Newsletter Daughters:
(Afternoon. Father and daughter shooting baskets.)
Father: “I haven’t seen Pat lately. How’s she doing?”
Daughter: “She’s tight with Brad. She goes to his house every afternoon.”
Father: (Voice rising) “Without his parents there? What do you think they’re doing?”
Daughter: (Passes ball to her father) “Duh!”
After that illustration of parental naivete, the newsletter goes on to report some disturbing statistics: The typical teenager has intercourse before high school graduation.
An estimated 43 percent of American girls, regardless of race or socioeconomic status, will have been pregnant at least once by the time they turn 20.
The article goes on to list a number of ways concerned parents can help their daughters avoid “out-of-control situations.” The point: “The longer your daughter waits to become sexually active, the more likely she is to make wise decisions.”

Stop the violence: October has been deemed Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Spokane YWCA is sponsoring a “Week Without Violence” beginning Oct. 6.
On Thursday, Oct. 10, the focus will be on men and the need to address violence.

More than just flowers: “It really isn’t that difficult to shop for women. Most of them love flowers, chocolate and perfume. You really can’t go wrong by buying one of those for your wife or girlfriend. But is it what she really wants?”
That’s the question posed in a recent issue of The RoMANtic, a newsletter designed to provide men “a practical and creative guide to a more romantic relationship.”
Published in Raleigh, N.C., The RoMANtic is an eight-page newsletter that tackles such issues as “Should you plan a holiday wedding?” and provides advice such as “Have you ever thanked your in-laws for some of the great qualities they instilled in your wife?”
A $15 ($25 for two years) subscription earns you six issues. For ordering information, call (800) 980-9808. , DataTimes ILLUSTRATION: Drawing
