Dear Heloise: For all those who live in arid climates, I have found a way to keep brown sugar soft.

Simply wrap a wedge of apple in cheesecloth and seal it in with the brown sugar. I keep my brown sugar sealed in a jar. - Lois Eichenberger, Colorado Springs, Colo.
