Itron Signs Deal With Chicago Utility

From Staff And Wire Reports

Itron Inc. has signed a $40 million contract with the utility that supplies natural gas in Chicago.

The deal will allow The Peoples Gas Light and Coke Co. to complete installation of Itron meter modules at 840,000 customer sites, said Itron Treasurer Mima Scarpelli.

Peoples had discontinued the program in 1992 because Illinois regulators would not let the utility recover the cost from its ratepayers.

Only 90,000 meters were installed before Peoples halted its program.

A recent ruling treated the costs of meter installation more favorably.

The new contract also includes an Itron fixed network capable of reading 5,000 meters via radio signals. Most will be read using radio equipment mounted in vans.
