Rogers, Ferris Appear Headed For Showdown
Greater Spokane League volleyball leaders Rogers and Ferris continued their perfect ways Tuesday in preparation for Saturday’s showdown at Ferris.
Karly Nill had 12 kills and 11 aces to lead Rogers (5-0) to a 15-12, 15-10, 15-8 win at University (0-6).
Missy Blackshire’s 12 kills, two aces and three blocks helped Ferris (5-0) to a 15-8, 15-12, 15-7 home win over Shadle Park (2-4).
To reach Saturday with 6-0 records, Rogers must beat North Central tonight and Ferris must top Lewis and Clark.
Nill served nine consecutive points in the third game and Jaime Christensen added 25 assists for Rogers.
Darcy Ruemping added 13 digs, Janelle Morrisette 31 assists and Julie Weatherred 11 kills and 12 digs for Ferris. Brooke Olzendam had 10 kills and 20 digs for Shadle Park.
Elsewhere, LC topped North Central 15-7, 12-15, 15-13, 12-15, 15-8 in a rematch of last year’s State AAA final won by NC, and Mead stopped Central Valley 13-15, 15-12, 15-11, 15-9.
At LC, the Tigers (3-2) scored the final six points of game three and blazed to a 9-2 lead in the final game. Becki Huddle had 10 assists and 15 digs, and Shannon Snow 11 kills and eight blocks for LC.
Lisa Hammond had 12 digs and Angie Domerise 11 kills for the Indians (1-4), who came back from an 11-8 deficit in the fourth game to lengthen the match.
At Mead, Jessica Sanborn had 31 kills and Andrea Carnahan 28 assists as the third-place Panthers (4-1) stopped the visiting Bears (1-5).
Mead’s Abby Hornstein and Staci Schuerman added eight kills apiece. Crystal Lee had 18 kills and 12 digs and Rikki Jackson 13 kills for CV.
Deb Asbury had 15 kills and Jenny Kann 20 assists as Frontier Leagueleading East Valley (3-0) beat host Clarkston 15-6, 10-15, 15-11, 15-6 in a replay of last year’s district title match.
Christy Gribble of the Bantams (1-2) had 14 blocks and eight digs.
Melissa Wollan’s 20 digs and Paige Quistad’s 10 kills led visiting Colville (3-1) to a 15-13, 16-14, 17-15 win at Cheney (0-2).
Colville trailed the third game 14-7 before rallying. Anna Getz had nine kills and five blocks for the Blackhawks.
Chantelle Frost had 11 kills and Meredith Thompson five blocks to help visiting West Valley (1-2) top Riverside 15-5, 13-15, 15-13, 15-6.
Cheryl Tallant had six kills and six digs for the Rams (0-1).
Frontier girls soccer
Katie Bowers and Nicki Snyder set up first-half goals then both scored in the second half to guide Deer Park/Riverside (3-0-0, 2-0-0) to a 4-0 win that knocked visiting WV (2-2-1, 2-1-0) out of first place.
Snyder’s goal came outside the 18-yard line. Snyder also fed Tracy Koesel for a header inside the box.
Cheney (3-2-0, 3-0-0) took over the league lead as Tanya Birchler and Brittany Talmadve scored twice apiece during a 6-0 win over visiting Colville (1-3-0, 1-2-0).
Kadee Anderson added one goal and one assist for the Blackhawks.
At Clarkston, Malea Schumacher scored three second-half goals to lead EV (3-2-0, 2-1-0) over the Bantams 6-0.
Clarkston (0-3-0, 0-3-0) had just 12 players on its roster and lost Sarah Compton with a strained tendon.
At Medical Lake, Kelly Pritchard’s two first-half goals lifted Pullman (1-1-0, 1-1-0) to a 3-0 win over the Cardinals (0-4-0, 0-3-0).
Pullman’s Sarah Chandler added a second-half goal, a 20-yard shot after a breakaway from midfield.
College volleyball
Washington State University’s volleyball team dropped to No. 10 in this week’s USA Today/AVCA Top 25 poll. The Cougars (9-2), ranked No. 6 last week, dropped as a result of last week’s loss to Washington.
The Huskies (10-1), victors over WSU and Gonzaga, moved to No. 18 from No. 24. WSU plays at Stanford (8-1) on Friday and Cal (2-5) on Saturday.
The Cardinal, who dropped from No. 2 to No. 4, were replaced by No. 2 Penn State (11-0) and No. 3 Florida (13-1). Hawaii (12-0) remains No. 1.
The Cougars also dropped in the Volleyball magazine Top 20 poll from No. 6 to No. 13.
College soccer
Whitworth College’s Rio Threestars was named NCIC soccer player of the week. Rio, a senior midfielder, scored both goals in the Pirates’ 2-0 win over Linfield on Saturday and scored the tying goal against Willamette on Sunday in a game that ended in a 2-2 tie.
The Whitworth women’s soccer team is ranked No. 17 in this week’s NAIA poll.
