Dollar Charges Higher
The dollar charged to big one-day gains against the Japanese yen and German mark Wednesday, shaking off its plunge of a day earlier when the Federal Reserve surprised traders by leaving interest rates unchanged.
In late New York trading, the dollar cost 110.44 yen, up from 109.00 Tuesday. This was the biggest one-day jump for the dollar against the yen since Aug. 7, when traders responded to the strength of the U.S. economy and tensions in Korea.
The dollar also rose to 1.5156 marks from 1.5011, the biggest one-day jump since April 9. The British pound cost $1.5610, down from $1.5655.
