Boxing Exec Passes Buck
With USA Boxing facing possible repayment of $2.36 million in misapplied U.S. Olympic Committee grants, the governing body’s recently fired executive director has implicated his predecessor.
Bruce Mathis, who served as USA Boxing’s executive director from September 1993 until being dismissed Feb. 17, said the man he replaced, Jim Fox, was responsible for submitting most of the questionable grants.
USA Boxing officials estimated that $1.257 million was improperly applied while Fox was in charge and $1.101 million was improperly applied while Mathis held that post.
Kevin Rooney’s claim that Mike Tyson breached a career-long contract and owes his former trainer $49 million was put in the hands of an Albany, N.Y., jury.
After nearly 4-1/2 hours of deliberations, however, the jury was dismissed for the night. It will not resume discussions until Monday because the judge has other proceedings scheduled.
Heavyweight Tommy Morrison will have to wait until Oct. 31 to make his court appearance in Jay, Okla., on a misdemeanor charge of transporting a loaded firearm.
A Delaware County hearing, originally scheduled for this morning, was delayed on a motion by defense attorney Leonard Logan.
