Cal Outlasts Oregon State Needs Three Overtime Rounds To Hold Off Winless Beavers

Associated Press

Quarterback Pat Barnes scored on a 3-yard keeper in the third round of overtime Saturday, and California came back from blowing a 14-point fourth-quarter lead to beat winless Oregon State 48-42 in Berkeley, Calif.

Both teams scored touchdowns in the first overtime possession and missed field goals in the second before Barnes went in for the decisive score to keep Cal (4-0) unbeaten and extend Oregon State’s losing streak to 14, the longest current streak in NCAA Division I.

Oregon State’s third possession in overtime ended in a missed 49-yard field goal by Randy Lund.

In the second, Ryan Longwell of California missed a 42-yard field goal try but Oregon State (0-4), after driving to the Cal 9, saw Lund’s 26-yard field goal try blocked following a bad snap. That forced the third OT sequence in college football’s newly instituted shootout format. Teams get the ball at the opponent’s 25 and are given the opportunity to outscore the other rather than sudden death.

Barnes was 20 of 37 for 323 yards and threw for four touchdowns, one in overtime to Dameane Douglas and three to Bobby Shaw, and was intercepted four times.

In Tempe, Ariz., Jake Plummer threw for 282 yards and four touchdowns, two in a 1:57 span of the second quarter, as the Sun Devils avoided an expected letdown and beat the Ducks.

Plummer, who had 292 yards in last week’s 19-0 upset of top-ranked Nebraska, completed 21 of 37 and Terry Battle had two second-half touchdown runs to ensure the Sun Devils (4-0, 2-0 Pac-10) of their best start since 1982.

Arizona State won its first nine games that season but finished 10-2.

Oregon (3-2, 0-2) had beaten the Sun Devils in three of the past four meetings and was trying for its first road victory over a top-10 team since beating No. 9 Arizona 19-10 in 1983.

In Ann Arbor, Mich., Chris Howard, playing only his second game this season, ran for 109 yards and four touchdowns as the Wolverines (4-0) downed the Bruins (1-2).

Howard, who was scholastically ineligible for the opener and missed last week’s Boston College game with an injury, scored on runs of 31, 10, 6 and 7 yards for the Wolverines. He is the first Michigan player to score four touchdowns since Derrick Alexander in 1992 against Minnesota.

Phillip Ward scored on a 42-yard interception return and Bjorn Merten kicked a 25-yard field goal for UCLA.

Michigan’s Scott Dreisbach, who started slowly, completed 13 of 25 passes for 236 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown to Clarence Williams, with one interception.

The Wolverines held Cade McNown to 8-of-27 passing for just 39 yards, with three interceptions. The Wolverines saw their only real threat of the first quarter end in an interception at the goal line, but broke the game open with three touchdowns in the second quarter and two more in the third. Michigan began substituting after building a 35-3 lead.
