Rite To Note Fulbright’s 50 Years
Eastern Washington University will host the Northwest’s 50th anniversary celebration of the Fulbright Program at a ceremony Monday at 10 a.m. in the Martin Hall Auditorium on the Cheney campus. The event is part of the international observance of the Fulbright Program, which tries to promote peace among citizens of the world.
Harriet Mayor Fulbright, wife of the late Sen. William Fulbright, will speak on “Fifty Years of the Fulbright Experience: Global Understanding, a Doorway to the 21st Century.”
She will be introduced by former House Speaker Tom Foley.
The Fulbright Program awards grants to students and scholars in the United States and other countries based on academic merit and professional promise.
Participants travel to foreign countries to teach, study or do research. The Fulbright Program was sponsored by Sen. Fulbright and established by Congress in 1946.
The goal of the program is to increase mutual understanding between Americans and citizens of other countries.
Past Fulbright scholars include American poet Maya Angelou, Greek Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, United Nations General Secretary Boutros Boutros Ghali and American writer John Updike.
More than 150 Fulbright scholars from the Northwest will attend Monday’s celebration. The general public is welcome. Admission is free.
