Choosing Tools

Always look for tools that are comfortable to grip. If you have gripping or strength problems, ratchet tools allow you to cut a stem or branch in several small steps. These are pruning tools recommended by Virginia Cooperative Extension:

Hand pruner: Used to cut stems up to 1/2-inch in diameter. Preferred are the bypass pruners that have sharpened, curved, scissor-style blades that overlap for a clean cut.

Pruning saw: Use a fine-toothed, curved pruning saw to cut branches up to 2-plus inches in diameter. This kind of saw is great for getting into tight spaces. Remember, the cut is always on the pull stroke.

Lopping shears: Used to cut branches up to 1-1/2 inches in diameter. These shears have long handles for easy reach and good cutting leverage, especially if you choose loppers with ratchet or gear joints.
